The lathe is a dangerous machine and will cause injury if used incorrectly, Lathe accidents are often lethal. Follow the safety practice below when using.
*Check the area around the Lathe for tripping and slipping hazards and anything that could obstruct your movement
*Always wear safety glasses
*Do not wear loose clothing
*Do not wear any jewellery including wedding rings
*Tie back long hair
Never operate the Lathe if:
*Drunk
*Tired
*Medication states not to operate machinery

== Before turning the machine on: ==
*Familiarise yourself with the Lathe, noting the position of the emergency stop.
*Check the guard is installed and works
*Check the Chuck is securely and correctly mounted, do not take for granted that the Chuck is securely and correctly mounted.
*Check the Tailstock and Tool Post.

== Before securing component: ==
*Ensure the Tool Post and Tailstock are not obstructing the Chuck or the Guard
*Briefly turn the machine on to check the rotation of the Chuck, if there is any wobble do not continue because the Chuck is not mounted correctly.

== Securing the component: ==
*Ensure the component is clean to prevent any small debris interfering with the Chuck securing the component. A simple wipe down is sufficient.
*Ensure the Chuck jaws are free from small debris, a simple wipe down is sufficient.
*Grip the component into the Chuck and tighten each jaw individually even if using a Self Centring Chuck and remove the Chuck Key.
*Never leave a Chuck Key in the Chuck.
*Briefly turn the Lathe on and check the component for wobble, if there is wobble turn the Lathe off. The component needs to be deeper in the Chuck or a Centre is needed in the Tailstock.

*Check the required speed for the material that will be turned using the Table and Formula below or an App. Never exceed the recommended speeds, if in doubt use a lower speed.
*Check Tools are sharp and free from damage. Never use a blunt or damaged tool on the Lathe.
Use an appropriate cutting agent to aid any work. If no cutting fluid is available use a lower speed and take shallower cuts.

== During Machining: ==
*Always use the guard
*If using a Centre ensure it is in place before turning the Lathe on.
*Never reach over the Lathe Bed when operating
*Never leave the Machine running for longer than necessary
*If swapping tools always turn the machine off
*Do not attempt to stop the Chuck by hand even after the Lathe is switched off
*When using the automatic feed setting never leave the Lathe or get distracted.
*Always keep both hands on the wheel of the Top Slide, Cross Slide or the Saddle Handle depending on the operation.

*3 Jaw Chuck - Self Centring Chuck, jaw slides move together when tightening. However all 3 Jaws should be tightened individually for safety and the Chuck Key must be removed.
*4 Jaw Chuck - Jaw slides move independently and component must be centred using a Dial Test Indicator.
